Beyond Wellness Wednesdays: Supporting Schools to Build Social Capital

Research indicates that teaching is one of the county’s most stressful professions within which to work. Recent findings from the 2019 Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey indicate that more than one in three school leaders experience significant stress, and exist in conditions that are not conducive to physical or mental health. Many challenges come from parents and students, policy mandates, and an ever-changing system. Anxiety and depression are common, and relationships in schools can often be maladaptive rather than supporitve. For teachers, the realities of the classroom can also be surprising, particularly in schools that are not able to resource their teachers well, or are located far away from support in times of challenge. Consequently, educators often rate their wellbeing as lower than other comparative social professions, and attrition rates appear to reflect some of these challenges.

This presentation will explore the current issues impacting on the engagement of Australian educators, and consider the importance of holistic, school wide approaches to supporting relationships and school communities. With a focus on evidence based mechanisms that schools can use to support the health and wellbeing of educators across leadership levels, the presentation considers possibilities for expanding beyond positive psychology approaches, to behavioural reform and growth.
